Korean War Memorial Park For Civil Victims

Project Proposal / Daejeon, South Korea, 2020

Project Team: Jeremy Kim, Min Kim, Mengyi Fan

Located in a valley outside of the city of Daejeon, the site for the park has a fraught history as a mass burial ground for civilian victims of the Korean War. Consisting of a building housing exhibition and memorial, as well as various community programs and a sculptural component, the project acts as space for reflection and reconciliation.

The main memorial hall, framed by the excavation sites, is designed as an abstraction of the burial experience through an undulating carved ceiling and controlled sources for natural light. Parts of the original excavations are retained within the building - a reminder of the scar in Korean history and the atrocities of war.
